Kate Marlais (LEH 1995-2002)

Composer Kate Marlais, who is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, put her Award to use to help fund the recording of her first-ever album.

My album is still brewing – the Emerging Talent Award afforded me studio time to record the remaining songs, and now the tracks are in the mixing stages, which always takes a long time as I’m rather a perfectionist! LEH probably honed that side of me!

It was a joy to be afforded the time to create my own music again, and also get back in the studio with my co-producer Jon, after such a strange year of pandemic. Made my creative process feel all the more special and vital.

Receiving support really does fan the creative fire in your belly, by giving you a true sense of support and the notion to keep on creating. I work a lot on other people’s projects within my career, and as much as I enjoy that, there’s nothing quite like seeing something of your own come to life. Something you’ve imagined in your mind - a strange little melody that once sprang into your head, which you’ve honed and eventually turned into an actual recorded song.

I think art is a beautiful friction between creating for yourself and leaving a legacy, and thanks to this award I was able to make more waves towards doing a bit of both.

I look forward to finishing the fine-tuning of the tracks and releasing my material soon.
