Springtime in London

The capital was looking at its best this weekend bathed in spring sunshine and full of blossom as LEH pupils and alumnae gathered for the London University networking lunch, hosted by Mark Tompsett.

The annual event for Lower Sixth pupils is designed to help them renew connections with former students and undertake research into degree options and locations as they complete their UCAS (university application) forms. It was held in the lively King’s College London, Strand campus, next door to Somerset House.

A huge thank you to members of the Class of 2024, all now undergraduates at universities across London, who so generously gave up their time to answer questions from pupils, followed by tours of their colleges.

They were Camilla Mammadova studying Biomedical Sciences at UCL; Emma Bhugun taking Geography with Economics at LSE; Megan Clarke studying Music at the Royal Academy of Music; Jasmine Berry taking Biochemical Engineering at UCL; Seo-Yon Shin studying Social Sciences at King’s College London; Sophia Parfitt undertaking Human Sciences at UCL; Soo Young Chung taking Psychology at UCL; along with first year medics Helen Yip at King’s College London, Sophie Koram at UCL, Thulasii Gowripalann at UCL and Mathumita Manimohan at St George’s.

Lower Sixth pupil Iona Abbott has kindly written this piece to share her thoughts about the networking lunch:-

"I found it really useful attending the lunch with alumnae now studying at various London universities. I gained fresh insight and different perspectives regarding life in London while studying for a degree. Before the event, I had been thinking about applying to institutions such as University College London or King’s College London, and speaking to current students at these universities helped confirm this aspiration.

After talking to Soo Young and Sophia, both at University College London, I not only discovered what it's like to study their particular courses, but also found out about the accommodation they're currently living in, and their plans for the future. Talking to people closer to my age, who went to the same school as me, was invaluable as they understood our position having recently gone through the same application process themselves.

Another conversation I found particularly helpful was when I spoke to Camilla about her Biomedical Science course. I had previously considered applying to study Neuroscience at university, however she helped me realise that studying her course at first would help to broaden my options if I happened to change my mind. It would also give me further insight into subjects that I don’t know as much about yet, which I might not have considered before.

Even speaking to alumnae taking very different subjects to mine provided me with useful information about the process of applying, and why going to university in London proves to be highly beneficial. Just a couple of their reasons were the endless opportunities to pursue your interests outside of your course in London, and the large variety of people you would meet.

I would strongly recommend all of the younger years seize the opportunity of speaking with LEH alumnae when the time comes, as they each have their own unique experience of narrowing down their university choices and can all provide important perspectives, no matter where you want to apply."
