Jean Beckinsale, beloved former Deputy Head of the Junior School at LEH and mistress of Form 1, passed away peacefully earlier this year. She worked at LEH from 1955 to 1984, dedicating thirty years to the education and wellbeing of her pupils.
Jean was a teacher of great kindness and quiet strength. She was always firm but nurturing, guiding each child with care and dedication, and sharing her expertise generously. Many alumnae remember the joys of watching silk moth caterpillars transform, clay-play sessions outdoors, and the excitement of catching sticklebacks in the Longford Stream. Her love of learning and adventure left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Colleagues remember her as a mentor and friend. She welcomed new teachers with patience and generosity, helping them discover the joys of teaching with creativity and fairness. Her retirement was celebrated with a memorable party in the gardens of Burlington House, a testament to her warmth and the affection she inspired.
LEH alumna and former teacher, Patricia White, Class of 1955, warmly recalls
“I am grateful for her friendship both as a colleague and friend. Many others are grateful too. She always he’d a lovely smile on her face to greet you. She had a penchant for fast cars which she loved to drive, even as she became older.”
Jean lived a full life beyond the classroom. She had a passion for fast cars, painting, travel, and storytelling. She shared wonderful memories of her early life in Africa, extensive travels, and her beloved Cyprus.
Even after leaving LEH, Jean maintained strong personal connections with her colleagues including Phoebe Samuels who said “Once Jean left LEH, we kept in close touch and she had a special place in our family, becoming godmother to my daughter, Eleanor and honorary grandmother to my son, Gabriel.”
Friends recall picnics in Kew Gardens, curry nights, and rainy-day painting sessions in her flat, all filled with her lively spirit and joy of life.
In her later years, Jean faced physical challenges with courage and cheerfulness. Never one to complain, she was always grateful to the staff who cared for her and continued to greet everyone with a smile and kindness. Though she had no immediate family, Jean’s life was full of friendships, loyalty, and devotion to those she loved.
Jean Beckinsale will be remembered for her warmth, her generosity of spirit, and her unwavering dedication to her pupils and friends. Her funeral service will be held on 18th February at 2.30 pm at St Luke’s, Avenue, Kew, followed by a wake at The Botanist, Kew Green.
She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
