By Day, She’s Saving the Planet… By Night, She’s Scoring Goals for Great Britain: Meet Cece Green!

Move over Batman — there's a new double-life hero in town. Meet Cece Green, Class of 2018. By day, she’s crunching numbers and driving sustainability as an Analyst for WRAP, a global environmental action non-governmental organisation (NGO). But when the workday ends, she swaps her keyboard for a lacrosse stick and heads to the field as a newly selected member of the Team GB Lacrosse squad!

We caught up with Cece in the middle of her whirlwind schedule to find out how she’s juggling climate action and elite sport — all while preparing for the World Games in China later this year.

When did your love for lacrosse begin?

I first learned about lacrosse from my two older sisters – they both played, so I was lucky enough to get an early start just throwing the ball around with them. Then, when I started at LEH in Year 7, I fell in love with it, and the rest is history!

From LEH to the world stage — what was your journey like?

At LEH, I was really fortunate to be surrounded by a high-performing team and great coaches who created an inspiring environment from the very start. A huge highlight from my time at school was winning the National Schools Championship in 2018 - the first LEH 1st Team to win in 30 years! I first played for the England U19 Team in 2016 and eventually represented England at the 2019 U19 World Cup. I went on to study at Durham University, which had a great lacrosse programme, and captained the U23 England Squad whilst I was there. This period was disrupted by Covid, which naturally brought some challenges. After university, I progressed to the England Senior Squad and became a member of the emerging Great Britain Squad in 2023. It’s taken a lot of commitment and self-belief, but it’s been so rewarding to see the goals I set years ago finally come to life.

What’s your training like ahead of the big games?

It doesn’t change hugely from the regular season, where I train roughly four times a week, with squad weekends every month. In the build up, we often go on tours, usually to America or Canada, to play against the best competition. I just got back from a week in Tokyo alongside Richard Lalor, Director of Performance Sport at LEH.The team Richard is the Human Performance Womens Lead for our team and we played the Japanese National Team, which was an amazing experience and really helped us prepare for the World Games in China later this year.

Sport and a full-time job — how do you balance it all?

It’s definitely tricky at times. Our coaches help plan and personalise our training sessions around our work schedule, which makes a huge difference. I’m also very lucky to work for a company that cares about my sport, offering flexibility and support when I need it.

What advice would you give your younger LEH self?

Be kinder to myself and more patient, trusting that I’ll see my achievements eventually.

What’s your favourite LEH memory or teacher?

It would have to be Nicky Budd (Tilbury). She was my first lacrosse coach and taught me throughout my time at LEH. She instilled in me grit, discipline, and a real love for the game, and has definitely shaped me into the player that I am today

With Japan ticked off and China on the horizon, Cece Green is absolutely one to watch — both on the field and in the fight for a better planet. We’ll be cheering her on every step (and sprint) of the way!
