Called Not Far From Brideshead: Oxford Between the Wars, the hardback is published on 31 March 2022 by Weidenfeld & Nicolson.
Daisy says: “My book is a classicist’s portrait of interwar Oxford featuring colourful dons, such as Maurice Bowra and ER Dodds, leading poets including TS Eliot and WH Auden and amazing women who broke into what was still a male world.”
The true story of the thriving knowledge and spirit of fun and foreboding that characterised Oxford between the two world wars will appeal to fans of Evelyn Waugh, PG Woodhouse and Nancy Mitford.
It brings to the fore the eminent classicists whose colourful lives straddled both world wars and took them beyond the confines of academia. The book resurrects a world in which men dominate, but women begin – most brilliantly – to break through.
In addition to an impressive array of books, Daisy writes widely for the press and has presented BBC programmes about Latin and ancient wisdom. In 2016 The Guardian named her as one of today’s leading female historians. In 2020 she was awarded the Classical Association Prize which recognizes efforts to bring the Classics to public attention.
